The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) general board will convene for a special meeting today to discuss rigging penalties amidst debates regarding a match-fixing investigation that has rocked Turkish football since last summer.

The main theme of the meeting will be Article 58 of the federation’s disciplinary regulations, titled “Influencing the Result of a Game,” which envisages relegation of teams that have been accused of match-rigging.

Turkish giants Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş are implicated in the match-fixing case and Fenerbahçe remains at the center of the accusations. Fenerbahçe Chairman Aziz Yıldırım and two other senior managers are behind bars awaiting trial.

Vice Chairman Lütfi Arıboğan said in a television show on Tuesday that Article 58 will stay, and sanctions will be imposed on the clubs whose members or managers rig, or attempt to rig, football games.

“We have to think about the prestige of Turkish football on an international platform,” he said, adding that the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), European football’s governing body, also expressed support for the TFF in their decision regarding match-fixing penalties. “UEFA sent us a written statement yesterday [Monday]. They told us that if the TFF general board makes a decision that way [to keep the Article 58], it won’t be against the orders and principles of the UEFA,” he said. Article 58 additionally penalizes clubs accused of match-fixing with a point reduction. The same article also stipulates fines and suspensions, both temporary and permanent, for those involved in professional sports who have been found guilty of match-fixing.

In a related development, the UEFA has recently withdrawn a report from the match-fixing case. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) report was prepared by the CAS inspector, Pierre Cornu. In the report, Cornu recommends that the TFF find Fenerbahçe guilty of match-fixing. Vice Chairman Arıboğan said the TFF had earlier asked UEFA to withdraw the report.

This season defending champion Fenerbahçe was kicked out of the UEFA Champions League’s top-level European club competition, which brings millions of euros of revenue to participating clubs, by the TFF. Runner-up Trabzonspor received the rights to take part in the competition this season. The İstanbul-based club has filed a case against the TFF and the UEFA at the CAS.

Arıboğan criticized Fenerbahçe, whose lawyers asked the CAS to keep Cornu’s report.
